Over recent years, accessible entrance signage was fading or non-existent in many buildings around campus. So, during the 2012-2013 academic year, the Accessible University Advisory Committee worked in collaboration with the Office of Equity and Inclusion and Campus Operations to identify how OSU can improve wayfinding signage for people with disabilities, so they can more easily identify accessible versus non-accessible pathways and building entrances.

The first phase of the project addressed entrance signage. Future phases will consider other kinds of wayfinding signage so that people know what routes on campus are inaccessible/steep, and other important features.

  • $800 spent to purchase new ISA and directional signs
  • Almost all building entrances on campus are now equipped with either an accessible entrance sign or a sign directing people to the nearest accessible entrance (exceptions and difficult locations still to be figured out)
  • Roughly 165 new signs have been installed

A signage dictionary is also being developed, so that the community knows what certain kinds of signage related to accessibility mean.
