It is possible to create an accessible PDF from a Word document as long as the document does not include math or chemical equations.
To convert from Word to PDF:
- Ensure the Word document is accessible. Run the Accessibility Checker as a final step.
- From the file menu, click “Save As” and choose where the file is saved
- Select .pdf from the file types.
- Click Options, then make sure "Document structure tags for accessiblity" is checked.
- Note: if using a Mac, ensure the “Best for electronic distribution and accessibility” toggle is selected.
- Note: never use the “export as PDF” button – this does not produce an accessible copy.
